TREVOR LEGG

Biography:
Born in Cyprus, Trevor spent his
formative years in England and Australia. The bulk of his primary
education took place in Australia, although he sat his GCSE “O”-levels
in the UK, resulting in a unique insight into the two different
education systems.
Rather unusually
for a librarian, Trevor graduated from Reading University with a
BSc in Mathematics, followed by a postgraduate diploma in Librarianship
from Aberystwyth.
He took up
his first professional post in Essex in 1989. He has since had extensive
experience with coaching and training of staff and the public. As
part of the rollout of the People's Network, Trevor was a trainer
for the Lifelong Learning module of the New Opportunities Fund applying
ECDL courses in Essex.
Trevor was
involved with the LearnEast project from the start, predominantly
as one of the frontline team delivering services in Essex. He was
also a member of the working group for introducing Learndirect to
Essex libraries.
Since May
2004 he has taken on the challenging new role of Lifelong Learning
Manager, leading a team of Service Development Officers to deliver
on the vision outlined in Framework for the Future. In partnership
with Learndirect, the team was recently successful in securing a
two-year contract with Jobcentre Plus to deliver ICT training and
job-search skills to recently unemployed and “economically” inactive
adults ineligible for other schemes.
In his spare time, Trevor combines his love of computers
and photography, and won 1 st prize in the Digitally Enhanced section
of 2004's Best of Tendring photographic competition .
Title:
Libraries & Learning: LearnEast
- a brave experiment or a fundamental change?
Summary:
This presentation will be about LearnEast, an innovative
ESF-funded project exploring the role of libraries in promoting
learning amongst hard to reach groups. The project aimed to
improve the confidence and employability of individuals by focussing
on basic ICT skills and Skills for Life support. Trevor will
look at the impetus behind the project, what the partner authorities
learned, and how this led to a fundamental change in the delivery
of Adult Learning in Essex Libraries. Along the way he'll
use real-life case studies to highlight the impact on individual
learners.
