MICHAEL EMLY
Biography:
Michael Emly is Team Leader for
Collection Management Services at Leeds University Library.
He has substantial prior experience both as a cataloguer and
as a systems librarian. In the past 3 years, he has led a
project to integrate material in non-Roman scripts into the
main Leeds OPAC, which now contains details of over 30,000 titles
in Chinese script as well as of a smaller number of books in Japanese
and Arabic.
Title:
Unicode implementation and
implications for standard Library Management Systems
Summary:
This talk will focus on the main
issues which arise when non-Roman scripts are used within a standard
Library Management System. The value and role of data in
non-Roman scripts will be discussed from the perspective of the
end-user, with a particular emphasis on the Library OPAC.
These service issues will be positioned within the broader library
context, including the use of appropriate standards (such
as Unicode and MARC21) and the availability of resources to support
associated activities such as ordering and cataloguing.
