MAURICE WAKEHAM

Biography:
Maurice Wakeham is
Academic Liaison Librarian for Health and Social Care at Anglia
Polytechnic University. He has carried out research projects on
the use of libraries by nurses and researchers. A current interest
is the developing role of the library in the digital age.
Title:
Using research to support teaching
Summary:
Nationally there has also been debate
on the role of research within higher education and increased interest
in the research/teaching nexus. Support for research : support
for learning was the title of a project carried out by Academic
Liaison Librarians at APU which investigated the relationship between
learning resources and research resources. We looked at whether
researcher/teachers encourage their students to use the same resources
they themselves use for their research and how far the move to electronic
resources has affected the relationship between learning and research
materials. The presentation will outline the results of interviews
carried out with 21 academics from across the whole of the University,
who are both teachers and researchers. Do research and learning
resources overlap? Are students encouraged to engage with
research resources? What kinds of resources are used?
How do the answers to these questions affect the provision of library
services? We may provide some answers
but we also hope to engage in a discussion with delegates about
the issues raised.
