LINDA BERUBE

Biography: Linda Berube is an American-born and educated librarian and educator who came to the UK in 1996 on a Fulbright Fellowship.  Her experience in the US ranged from administrative positions in academic engineering and law libraries to information services management in public libraries.  In addition, she was a university lecturer in literature, rhetoric, critical analysis.

Her experience in the UK has been primarily with public library technology services development, with the exception of a position with Amnesty International as an Information Officer for the Americas.  After the Fulbright Fellowship, located at the Norfolk American Library and the English and American Studies School at the University of East Anglia, she was the Research and Development Co-ordinator at EARL:  the national public library networking consortium.  She assumed her current post at Co-East when EARL ceased operation in 2001.

Current areas of development and services include:  interoperability of LMS ("library catalogues as portals"); digital reference services (Co-East maintains the national service, Ask A Librarian, and is managing and developing, for England's Museums, Libraries, and Archives Council (MLA), 'the People's Network real-time online enquiry service: Enquire; Co-East also developed and manages a cross-library service, Ask Wales ); e-books and mobile technology; joint e-procurement of electronic resources.  She has published articles and presented papers in the above areas

Title: The Digital Divide - Who gets to participate in the virtual community

Summary: Linda will discuss the following points in her session :-

1. Overview of where the current 'divide' is

2. Free vs Fee web

3. Public Libraries role in access, extending access (examples, such as Enquire, Essex e-books etc)

4. Public Libraries role as mediator between rights of author/publisher and rights of public:  i.e. e-commons

5. Digital Divide and prison libraries (just an overview of issues)
