JANE WALTON

Biography:
Jane is the Director of Learning,
Access and Skills of the Yorkshire Museum, Libraries and Archives
Council a post she has held since December 2002. Prior to that Jane
was Director of Access and Learning at the Yorkshire Museums Council.
Jane worked at the museums council for 11 years holding the positions
of professional development manager and training and information
officer. Before her career at the museums council Jane worked for
the members of Wakefield Metropolitan District Council as a research
and information officer. She started her career in libraries, as
college librarian at Bretton College after graduating from Newcastle
Polytechnic. Her career, has therefore come full circle and her
new position reflects her ambition to work for both the museums
and libraries sector. Jane is a member of the regional education
and skills commission, the regional executive of the Young People's
Enterprise Forum, vice-chair and CPD adviser of the West Yorkshire
branch of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and
chair of Adult Learning Yorkshire and the Humber. In her spare time
Jane is a primary school governor and has recently training to mentor
year 10 children in school.

Everyone needs a mentor
Summary:
This presentation will provide an overview of mentoring
in the context of continuing professional development in the sector.
This will include a summary of the results of research undertaken
into the benefits of mentoring from the point of view of the individual,
the mentor, the employer and the profession. Delegates will be given
the opportunity to consider whether mentoring is something they
would consider and if so what are some of the guiding principles.
