DAVID HELLIWELL

Biography: David Helliwell has been in charge of the Chinese language collections at the Bodleian Library since 1976. His principal areas of interest are in the Library's extensive holdings of rare Chinese books, and improving access to them in both print and through the development and implementation of automated original script cataloguing. He is a founder member of EASL (European Association of Sinological Librarians), which has met regularly for the past 25 years to promote co-operation and  collaborative activity between European librarians
responsible for Chinese collections.

Title: East Asian cataloguing in British libraries: the contribution of allegro.

Summary: The paper will describe the use of allegro to produce original script catalogues both locally in Oxford and nationally in the UK union catalogues of Chinese and Japanese books. It will also raise important issues of indexing and display which are not currently addressed by
conventional systems and the formats and rules for data entry on which they are based, and point the way to future improvements.
