CIARA EASTELL

Biography:  Ciara Eastell has worked in public libraries since 1992.  Her career has included employment with public library services in Nottinghamshire, Gateshead, Cambridgeshire and most recently  in Somerset, where she was Principal Assistant County Librarian.  In May 2005, Ciara took up a new role with The Reading Agency, as Senior Project Manager, a role which is focused on improving services to 11-19 year olds in libraries across England, as part of the transformation programme initiated by Framework for the Future.

Ciara was the only librarian to be selected in 2004 to participate in the Clore Leadership Programme, a new national cultural leadership programme, funded by the Clore Duffield Foundation and led by the ex-Culture Secretary Chris Smith.

Ciara is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts.

Title: Developing cultural leadership : my year as a Clore Fellow

Summary: Ciara will reflect on her year as a Fellow on the prestigious Clore Leadership Programme, a new leadership programme aimed at building leadership capacity within the UK cultural sector.

In her presentation, Ciara will briefly outline the core elements of the programme, before moving on to reflect on the powerful insights which the programme has given her - insights on herself, libraries, the cultural sector and broader society.  Ciara aims to use this session at Umbrella to stimulate debate about the urgent need to develop a new cadre of public library leaders, who will recreate the public library to meet the needs of today's communities.
